Oak Lane Day School Prepares Over 270 Lasagna Dinners for Elderly Homebound

It was community service time again at Oak Lane Day School when parents, students, and teachers rallied together to prepare and package lasagna dinners to donate to Aid for Friends, an organization that provides free services to the needy, disabled, and elderly homebound of Southeast Pennsylvania.

This was the seventh year that Oak Lane has provided dinners for Aid for Friends. Oak Lane families donated the supplies for the project. Everyone had a job from the littlest pre-school child to the Head of School. Each grade level was assigned to a different stage of the project, which included assembling and baking the lasagna, placing a portion of the lasagna in aluminum foil trays along with servings of peas and apple sauce, and packaging them to be frozen. Sherry Shaeffer, Oak Lane's Community Service Coordinator, traditionally delivers the meals to theAid for Friends facility in Philadelphia once they are completely frozen and ready for distribution.

The service project was a great success. Approximately 275 meals were prepared, and the children made colorful, cheerful cards to include in the packages. Ms. Shaeffer had nothing but words of praise for the children and the community for the work that went into this project. She noted that, "our children experienced once again how service to others can be joyful and rewarding."

Community service projects at Oak Lane Day School are taken very seriously. A great deal of planning and preparation is involved and the projects themselves are carefully chosen to create positive change in the environment, the lives of animals, and, in this case, the lives of people in need.
