Oak Lane Day School Merit Scholarships Awarded for the 2008-2009 School Year

Oak Lane Day School, located just outside of the Chestnut Hill area, is committed to providing educational opportunities for a diverse population. To support this commitment the school offers a Community Scholarship Program for children in Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grades. The scholarship covers 75% of the school's annual tuition through the Sixth Grade. Children who demonstrate strong academic achievement, good citizenship, and extracurricular involvement are encouraged to apply. The application process includes interviews with the family, visits to the school, and teacher recommendations.

Next year, two children will attend Oak Lane on scholarship. Inaya Mander will enter the Third Grade, and James Nicholson will be a fourth grader. Both are from Mt. Airy. Recently, the children and their families came to Oak Lane to attend a welcoming ceremony. While enjoying cookies and lemonade, James and Inaya were presented with scholorship certificates, and they and their families had an opportunity to meet and talk with their future teachers Allen Garner (2/3 grade) and Sherry Shaeffer (4/5 grade). Head of School Karl Welsh and Director of Admissions Lynn Unipan were also on hand to express their appreciation of the families' decisions to become a part of the Oak Lane community.

Inaya and James bring with them strong academic abilities as well as varied talents and interests. Inaya enjoys math, writing, and volunteering for classroom jobs. She has just begun taking guitar lessons and was excited at the prospect of joining Oak Lane's guitar ensemble. She has a good time hanging out with her friends in and out of school and likes especially to teach her 5-year-old sister cheerleading routines! James lists math, history, and language arts as his favorite school subjects. He has taken drumming lessons for the past 2 years at the Settlement School and has been chosen for the school ensemble. Both Inaya and James will feel right at home at Oak Lane with their interests in music and performance! James was impressed with Oak Lane's extensive campus during his visit and looks forward to spending as much time as possible outside, studying all the animals to be found on the grounds.

The Community Scholarship Program has been in existence at Oak Lane since 2003 and has provided the school with a rich source of students and families who enhance the community with their energy and interest. The school's most recent additions are no exceptions, and Oak Lane warmly welcomes James, Inaya, and their families into the fold and wishes them great happiness and success.
