Reading and Writing Project of Teachers College Founded and directed by Lucy Calkins, the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project is housed at Teachers College Columbia University. The Project supports literacy instruction through research, writing and professional development. Oak Lane teachers who participate in summer sessions learn how to implement the program in the classrooms. In Writing Workshops, students learn to observe their lives and the world around them, and to collect, draft, revise, and publish narrative and expository texts. In Reading Workshops, students are taught strategies and habits of effective reading. They learn to talk, think and write about their reading, with the ultimate purpose to live richly literate lives.
