Learning
Skills Program
An
individualized learning support program for students in 1st through 6th
Grade
What
is the Learning Skills Program?
|
The
Learning Skills Program supplements the regular classroom program
by providing qualified students with one-on-one 45-minute learning
support sessions taught by a master's level teacher of reading or
special education. The frequency of sessions ranges from two to
five times per week depending on the specific needs of the learner.
Enrollment is limited, and there is a fee.
The
program grew from the recognition that some students need additional
support in order to fulfill their academic potential. The goals
of the program are to identify and teach the skills essential to
effective learning and to promote student success in the regular
classroom. In each case, the student's individual needs dictate
the direction and content of the instruction. With this support,
students are able to develop the skills needed for academic success.

Why
Choose Oak Lane Day School? |
We
believe that all children possess unique gifts and a variety of
strengths that have the potential to enrich our learning community.
Children
at Oak Lane have multiple opportunities to explore areas of interest
or strengths alongside the work they are doing to develop their
academic skills within the Learning Skills Program.
We
offer rich programs in the visual and performing arts, physical
education, science and, within the regular classroom setting, in
language arts, math and social studies. Our small class sizes, experiential
learning, differentiated instruction and experienced teachers provide
an engaging program closely matched to the needs of a variety of
learners.
Frequent
communication and collaboration between the classroom teachers and
the Learning Skills professional helps to ensure student success.
Classroom work is completed during learning skills sessions when
appropriate.
Students
benefit socially and academically by daily engagement with a diverse
group of learners. |
Admission
to the Program |
Acceptance
to the Learning
Skills Program is based on
a complete review of the admissions materials: admission application,
existing school records, a full-scale psycho-educational evaluation,
and a school visit. Parents also meet with a learning skills professional
or school administrator to discuss the program.
Students
accepted to the program demonstrate strengths outside their specific
area of need, are willing to work hard, and have the potential to
make positive contributions in both their classrooms and the larger
school community. The success of the program relies on the cooperative
partnership of administrators, parents, teachers and any other professionals
that provide support to the student. |
