Art
as a subject matter is process-oriented, and allows students to
explore materials as they create. For young children, clay is the
preferred medium for sculpture when creating their first pieces
of art. Puppets are used to teach art history and introduce students
to renowned artists and their work. Art and art history are regularly
integrated with classroom themes whenever possible.

The
study of ceramics is furthered through the use of the potter's wheel.
Students in the Primary Division paint their first acrylic canvas
and learn about color mixing, form, line and composition. Art history
lessons increase in depth as students progress through the grades.
Art at this level is both process and product-oriented, and is regularly

Our
4th through 6th graders continue gaining ceramic techniques through
the use of the potter's wheel and working with acrylics on canvas.
Each 6th grader works on a self-portrait where they apply visual
fundamentals of line, form and perspective that have been learned
over their years at Oak Lane. Students also have opportunities to
pursue independent interests in art. Written and oral reports are
prepared for art history.
