Pre-primary

Music

Oak Lane's youngest children explore music by singing, moving, playing percussion instruments and using dramatic play. Songs, rhymes and play parties broaden and enhance classroom themes. Through musical activities social skills are developed, such as beginning and ending together, taking turns, being a leader and follower, and listening to one another.

Primary

Music

Students build on their previously learned skills. They engage in a variety of musical experiences involving singing, listening, exploring, improvising, composing, moving, writing and performing. Rhythmic and melodic notation are emphasized, while skills such as enunciation, breathing, solfege and unison singing allow the students to progress in their musicality, both individually and together as a chorus. Readers' Theater, beginning composition, instrumental skills on xylophones, easy melodies, creative movement and folk dances are other activities in music class. Recorder instruction begins when students reach third grade.

Intermediate

Music

Students improve on their performance skills in chorus and ensembles by reading and performing through using independent voices, listening to each other, carefully counting, developing pitch accuracy, improving diction, using correct posture and learning stability of tempo. Fourth grade continues recorder instruction while fifth and sixth grades apply and enhance their skills in ensemble and orchestral settings that include recorders, guitars and a variety of percussion instruments. Renaissance and Baroque music as well as folk tunes from around the world are staples of Oak Lane's repertoire.
